New Small Business Occupancy Checklist

Please note that this is not an all-inclusive document, but a reference tool intended to assist business owners in ongoing safety maintenance and preparation for annual inspection.

New Small Business Occupancy Checklist

    • At a minimum, a door key for each exterior door shall be required at final inspection for the fire department Knox Box; if applicable (permits after-hours emergency access).
    • Any Penetrations in the 1 hour rated tenant separation walls shall be sealed with a 1 hour rated UL listed fire barrier.
    • Holes in drywall shall be patched
    • All lay-in ceiling tiles shall be in place in suspended ceilings.
    • There shall be no open electrical boxes or circuit breakers panels.
    • Exit signs and emergency lights shall operate at all times; including on battery back-up if applicable.
    • Fire extinguishers shall have current certification tag (within one year of date marked on tag) and shall be properly hung (48” or less from floor to top of handle & 4” or more from floor to bottom of extinguisher). At least one extinguisher shall be in public view and there shall be no more than 75’ of walking distance to reach an extinguisher within each tenant space.
